They were not at all ashamed, Nor did they know how to blush. Assemble yourselves, And let us enter the fortified cities, And let us be silent there. For the Lord our God has put us to silence And given us water [ ba ] of gall to drink, Because we have sinned against the Lord.

I am mourning; Astonishment has taken hold of me. Why then is there no recovery For the health of the daughter of my people? For they are all adulterers, An assembly of treacherous men. They are not valiant for the truth on the earth. Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled; They are gone. I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

And who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord has spoken, that he may declare it? Why does the land perish and burn up like a wilderness, so that no one can pass through? And I will send a sword after them until I have consumed them. We are greatly ashamed, Because we have forsaken the land, Because we have been cast out of our dwellings. And the young men— [ bj ] no longer on the streets! For all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.

Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good. For this is Your rightful due. For among all the wise men of the nations, And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation.

He makes lightning for the rain, He brings the wind out of His treasuries. My wound is severe. There is no one to pitch my tent anymore, Or set up my curtains. And the holy flesh has passed from you. When you do evil, then you rejoice. With the noise of a great tumult He has kindled fire on it, And its branches are broken.

Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are those happy who deal so treacherously? You are near in their mouth But far from their [ bt ] mind. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, And prepare them for the day of slaughter. And if in the land of peace, In which you trusted, they wearied you, Then how will you do in the [ bu ] floodplain of the Jordan? Do not believe them, Even though they speak [ bw ] smooth words to you. Come, assemble all the beasts of the field, Bring them to devour!

But be ashamed of your harvest Because of the fierce anger of the Lord.

It was profitable for nothing. Where is the flock that was given to you, Your beautiful sheep? For you have taught them To be chieftains, to be head over you. Will not pangs seize you, Like a woman in [ cj ] labor? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil. Woe to you, O Jerusalem!

Will you still not be made clean? They returned with their vessels empty; They were ashamed and confounded And covered their heads.

Therefore the Lord does not accept them; He will remember their iniquity now, And punish their sins. But I will consume them by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, [ cn ] divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart.

And if I enter the city, Then behold, those sick from famine! Yes, both prophet and priest go about in a land they do not know. Has Your soul loathed Zion? Why have You stricken us so that there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but there was no good; And for the time of healing, and there was trouble. Remember, do not break Your covenant with us.

Or can the heavens give showers? Therefore we will wait for You, Since You have made all these.

Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth. Or who will bemoan you? Or who will turn aside to ask how you are doing? Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you; I am [ cp ] weary of relenting! I have neither lent for interest, Nor have men lent to me for interest. Every one of them curses me. In Your enduring patience, do not take me away. Know that for Your sake I have suffered rebuke. Will You surely be to me like an unreliable stream, As waters that [ ct ] fail?

Jeremiah, Priest And Prophet

Let them return to you, But you must not return to them. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth. They shall not be buried; neither shall men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them.

Let their men be put to death, Their young men be slain By the sword in battle. Provide no atonement for their iniquity, Nor blot out their sin from Your sight; But let them be overthrown before You.
